Anders Lago, Mayor of Sodertalje, Sweden, is invited to participate in a hearing conducted by the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe on April 9, 2008. The Commission is composed of members from the American House of Representatives and the Senate. Among those attending will be Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Senator John Kerry (D-MA).
Anders Lago has received a special invitation from the Commission´s Chairman, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL). Mayor Lago is requested to describe the strategies Sodertalje uses in meeting the challenges when receiving Iraqian refugees.
-This week, both the BBC and the Financial Times visited Sodertalje to report on the fact that we accept more Iraqian refugees than the United States and Canada combined. The international interest demonstrates the great attention this issue deserves and the special situation our city is now in, says Anders Lago.
-It is not everyday that a Swedish local-government politician speaks in the American Congress. I am obviously honored by the invitation and will do my utmost to convey Sodertalje´s vision of this issue.
-My message is fairly simple. It is not only in our country that we must cooperate in receiving refugees. Every country in the world must participate in aiding refugees in a better way, concludes Anders Lago.
