In order to protect valuable nature, both the state county administration and the local governments can designate nature reserves according to the Environmental Code. Of the twenty reserves in Södertälje, the local government has designated seven.
Södertälje Nature Reserve - a guide to nature (6MB)
Three of Södertälje’s nature reserves used to be protected nature conservancy areas in accordance with our previous nature conservation legislation. Since 1999 those protected nature conservancy areas are to be considered as nature reserves according to the Environmental Code. In the reserves, certain regulations apply for both landowners and the general public. These areas have usually been protected for several reasons. Not only have natural values been preserved, but the nature reserves have also been made more accessible.
Amongst the actions that have been taken and the visitor facilities that have been provided within the areas, we can mention a few here. Information boards have been placed in the reserve, car parks have been provided, fences have been put up and passages have been made as well as clearing and marking of pathways. The protection of these areas has in many cases made it possible to preserve our valuable cultural heritage as well.
