Description

Bornsjön nature reserve (earlier called Bornsjön nature concervancy area) is situated a couple of miles southwest of Stockholm and borders to Lake Mälaren and the Södertälje bay. The main part of the nature reserve is located in Salem- and Botkyrka municipalities. The reserve also includes Lake Tullan, which western half belongs to Södertälje municipality. The Bornsjön area can be characterised as a rift valley landscape as well as an unmistakable Sörmland type historical farmland. Modern croplands, beautiful former pastures with mostly oak and hazel and shady wooded areas dominate the manorial landscape.

There are also evergreen forests with high nature values in the area. Bornsjön is limnologically valuable and an important nesting area for osprey and black-throated diver.

Accessibility

The Bornsjön reserve is rather easy to access and is within cycling distance for those who live in the soutwest Stockholm suburbs. There are several roads and paths going through the area. Several small roads are closed for motorised traffic but can be used for cycling or walking.

The purpose of the reserve:

To keep the area accessible for the type of recreational activities that requires no special facilities. Recreational activities that do require special facilities as golf, go-cart and similar, go against the purpose of the reserve and the protectional interests of Bornsjön as a water supply and will therefore have to be located somewhere else.

Decree: The County Administrative Board, February 3, 1995.

Acreage: (the part that belongs to Södertälje municipality): 239 hectare of which 37 hectare is water.
